Rhinoplasty - Reshape your nose!
Rhinoplasty, also known as nose surgery, is used to reshape the nose and is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures today. It can correct many problems you may have with your nose ranging from aesthetic reasons to correcting birth defects. Some common problems include:
- The size of the nose
- The shape of the tip
- The shape of the bridge
- The span of the nostrils
- The angle between the nose and upper lip
- Birth defects
- Upper respiratory problems
For many people rhinoplasty is used for aesthetic reasons, however, it can also be used for reconstructive purposes. Although rhinoplasty will not necessarily provide you with your ideal look, it can enhance your self-confidence and improve your appearance.
The rhinoplasty procedure is performed with local anesthetics and sedatives to numb the area while still awake, or under general anesthesia to make you sleep through the whole procedure.
First, the plastic surgeon will separate the skin from the bone and cartilage, and then will remove some of the bone to reduce the hump and create a slimmer bridge.
Cartilage in the tip of the nose can be trimmed to give you the shape that you like, and if you are having your nostrils worked on, the plastic surgeon can remove small sections of the nose to bring them closer together. Lastly, the angle of the nose can also be changed by trimming the septum which is the piece of skin that separates your nostrils.
Following the procedure, a splint will be taped to the nose to ensure that the bone and cartilage heal correctly. For the first couple days, the area will be a bit swollen and bruised, but this will subside a few days later and normal daily activities can begin. Those who wear glasses will have to wear contacts during the healing process.
Rhinoplasty is a common plastic surgery procedure that is performed on thousands of people each year but is not for everyone. The ideal rhinoplasty candidate should be physically and psychologically healthy and have realistic expectations. Younger people, such as teenagers, should wait until their growth spurt has ended, somewhere around 14 or 15 for girls, and a bit later for boys. Also, they should be socially and emotionally mature before considering having the procedure.
